Again, I was cutting out images from old magazines for my Adult ESL students, thank God my friends are all “Vision Board” collage-ers because I certainly would not keep a magazine from 2005, and I ran across this article.

I loved this story when I read it, so I’m sharing. http://www.accessmylibrary.com/article-1G1-134905764/brian-williams-aha-moment.html

For an extra-added bonus, here is another favorite of mine, a holiday treat: Falling in Love. See the bottom of the page for a further “Bonos”.

NINETEEN YEARS AGO, I WAS A 27-YEAR-OLD NEWS CORRESPONdent working for a local TV station, making no money, and enjoying the single life in Washington, D.C. I was concentrating on my career as a news anchor, one I’d wanted since I was an 8-year-old boy in Elmira, New York, staging fake newscasts and publishing weekly household reports using my father’s shirt cardboards. I thought I had my life perfectly mapped. I figured I would climb the ladder to success and, once there, my position would enable me to find the right person. But as they say, if you want to give God a good laugh, make a plan.

One afternoon while walking through the halls just before going on the air, I turned a corner and almost ran into a woman holding a stack of tapes in her arms. Our eyes met, and she looked down sheepishly. I’d always read about the dynamic of lightning bolts and little cupids fluttering around, and I’d never really believed these things happened. But I’m afraid I couldn’t stop staring at her. When we introduced ourselves, I learned that her name was Jane and she was an executive producer. A few minutes later, when the broadcast began, she was in my head … literally: She kept telling me the time remaining in the segment and making suggestions through the earpiece I was wearing. When it was over, I went to my friend Bernie’s office, shut the door, and slumped down in his chair. “Bernie,” I said, “I think I’ve met her.”

I asked Jane to dinner and went to pick her up in my 1983 beige Ford Escort–a real chick magnet. She came to the door with her hair wet, barefoot in a blue dress, putting on her earrings, and I’ve just never been so sure of anything in my life. After that, all of our dates and conversations were passing time. I knew where this was headed. I proposed to Jane a few months later during a weekend trip to the North Carolina coast. It wasn’t quite what I’d envisioned: We had a fight en route about her driving (and no jury would convict me for the things I said), and she kicked me out of the car. After I spent a short time on the side of the road, we made up, then checked into a hotel that gave new meaning to the word mildew. All we did when we were indoors was sneeze and sniffle. Despite everything, when I asked her on the beach to marry me, she said yes.

We’ve been married for 18 years now, and our two children still enjoy hearing the story of how we met. At the end, I tell them that they’ll know love when they see it. It can’t be manufactured. There’s not a bar that sells it, not a store where you can find it. I tell them that if they are patient enough, they can find someone who is truly right for them. And I tell them that a good relationship takes an extraordinary amount of mutual respect … and a sense of humor. But it all starts at falling in love. Before I met Jane, I thought that such thermonuclear attraction happened only in the movies, with tight shots of both people’s eyes and accompanying music. I thought I was in control of my own destiny … that in a few years I would become my ideal self, and then I would embark on a campaign to find someone to marry. Seeing her in the hall busted my plans and forced me to make new ones. It was the luckiest thing that ever happened to me.

Williams, Brian. “Brian Williams’s Aha! Moment; breaking news: the NBC anchorman learns that love is what happens while you’re making other plans.(LYBL).” O, The Oprah Magazine. 2005. accessmylibrary. (December 16, 2009). http://www.accessmylibrary.com/article-1G1-134905764/brian-williams-aha-moment.html

A final bonus bonus: Brian Williams and Bono

Blogs I am following (June 2009)

Occasionally I feel compelled to mention which blogs I follow on a semi-regular basis. It’s funny how often I change regular haunts, and that usually happens whenever I lose my Firefox bookmarks. My blog consumption tastes are fickle, but here are the ones I return to reliably (because generally they haven’t let me down). Looking over the list, it is obvious to me how much I discriminate against blogs that give incomplete RSS feeds and blogs which hide most of their content under the fold with the More link. Doing that forces the read to click the link for every single damn post I wish to read.

James Fallows does some extraordinary (and entertaining) reporting about living in Beijing. Unfortunately, this reporting is about to end, but he will still be blogging.

Climate Progress is an influential blog about the science of global warming. Less wonky but more into political and social issues is Grist.

For general liberal commentary I check Think Progress’s Wonk Room. (I would call this my main news source these days). I also follow Matt Yglesias pretty closely. I also follow Washington Monthly blog , but not as often because it covers much of the same ground as Think Progress (even though it’s extremely well written).

Tiny Revolution is a political satire blog. Very funny sometimes.

Robert Reich is a liberal economist who has always been ahead of the curve on policy issues. (For conservative dissent, I check Cafe Hayek) .

The Business Desk with Paul Solman. Solman is a great PBS News Hour reporter about economics. He started a recent blog answering one question a day from readers. A lot of great things come up.

Houston Chronicle blogs. One reason I hate Chronicle blogs is that they don’t have full RSS feeds. But I end up reading Techblog with Dwight Silverman, Loren Steffy, Lisa Falkenberg, Eric Berger (aka Science Guy). Only senior columnist Leon Hale seems to have a full feed these days. Update: Techblog does have a full RSS feed—horray!

Marginal Revolution is an economics blog run by Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok. I find a lot of off-the-wall social science stuff from there.

Sex & Relationships: Roissy has a NSFW blog about picking up women. It’s mildly offensive, but insightful and well written. I just discovered Savage love blog and expect to be reading this a lot more often. (Dan Savage’s well written dating columns are frank and not to be missed). For the woman’s perspective on dating, I check out divas on a date .

2blowhards is a general arts blog (with a nonfunctioning RSS feed as well). Focus on movies, sexy links and light-hearted conservatism. Ray Sawhill (the uberblogger behind 2blowhards) has a NSFW cultural blog with personal touches (with lots of risque pictures—warning).

Oddly, I follow few literary blogs. The reason is simple. I almost never read literary stuff on the computer! (Instead I download longer literary things onto my PDA RSS Reader so I can read it at the supermarket). But I follow Literary License (a Houston literary blog with brief reviews), Fictionaut blog (run by editors of the always-in-beta literary community) and Complete Review/Literary Saloon (outstanding litblog with unfortunately defective RSS feed). On my PDA I always follow Conversational Reading, Mumpsimus, Reading Experience, Useless Tree , Virginia Quarterly Review, Critical Mass National Book Critics Circle blog, The Guardian’s Book Blog , Joy Castro as well as a few dozen by writer friends.

Amyshealth. One of the best friends from college developed breast cancer and is describing her experience via blog. It’s harrowing to read, but Amy writes with an almost ghoulish sense of humor. Amy is one of the most upbeat people I know, and it shows.

David Hudson’s IFC The Daily is probably the most distinguished film blog I’ve found, marred only by the fact that I can only get partial feeds. House Next Door delivers in that department. It’s a group blog about cinema, comics and the arts.

Bigpicture (gigantic photos about a single topic) and Postsecrets (people send their most private secrets via postcard) are 2 fascinating. Less known but still fascinating is Mardecortesbaja, a site about public domain art, old Hollywood and comics.

Tom Johnson’s I’d Rather be Writing covers tech writing and blogging. Daily blog tips covers useful info for bloggers. Sometimes the lists begins to seem tiresome (“10 Ways to Make your Blog more fruity” etc). I still look at the Content Wrangler’s RSS feed though the site itself is unusable.

I get a lot of recommendations for downloading free music from Jamendo’s blog.

Brad Ideas is a blog of the EFF chairman Brad Templeton. Lots of musings about innovation and government policy.

Get Rich Slowly and Penelope Trunk’s Brazen Careerist are two practical blogs about finances and careers.

Thenonsequitur analyzes political rhetoric and uncovers the logical fallacies in them. Written by 2 philosophy professors. Even though they sometimes choose easy targets, they also identify many subtle errors in logic which has only made me more careful about what I read. A similar blog which analyzes fallacies from the point of view of empirical science is the Denialism blog.

Ebooks: I am deeply involved in ebook publishing. I used to write/run Teleread (even though now I catch it only on RSS, and not on the blog itself (too much under the fold). Mike Cane’s Ebook Test site covers technical issues as does Threepress blog and Tools for Change Oreilly blog. Finding free ebooks is about what you’d think it’s about.

Blogs I no longer follow religiously for various reasons:

Boingboing – still well written and lots of original finds, but too trendy for my liking.

New York Times blogs. I read a lot of entries from them, but they have no full RSS feeds and their comment moderation policy for blogs seem inconsistent. (Besides, NYT features individual blog posts on its main site, so I keep up).

Oreilly Radar – very well written and cutting edge, but I don’t have time for it.

Easter Lemming Liberal is a Texas liberal blog run by Gary Denton. Recently, after he vowed to post less this year, he has been turning his energy to Facebook posts instead.

Photomatt is still interesting and full of the latest about blog technology, but probably too esoteric for me by now. I’ve kind of veering out of software blogs recently.

How to learn Swedish in 100 Difficult Lessons. Funny blog by gay American living in Stockholm. I don’t read it often, but generally enjoy it thoroughly every time I do.

Podcasts I follow. By the way, I am extremely picky about the podcasts I follow. I download lots of stuff, but don’t listen to as much as I should. I have several other podcasts I download and listen to, but not reliably, or more selectively. The ones below are ones I listen to almost every episode of.

Alex Saunders Philosopher’s Zone is a a great Australian podcast about highbrow philosophy topics.

From our own Correspondent. First person accounts by BBC reporters.

Escapepod. Scifi ezine on podcast. Creative Commons, all right!

Washington Week in Review podcast has inside the Beltway reporters commenting on news. I also download Bill Moyers’ podcast if I miss the Friday show.

Miette’s Bedtime Podcast is one of my alltime faves. A british lady reads her favorite stories aloud. Damn, I’ve been neglecting this podcast. Need to catch up. One of my alltime faves.

I’ll number these books so that it seems more drumroll -y.

1) Reflections on the Art of Living: A Joseph Campbell Companion – I have not ventured into this book. My friends that have read it have all lost practical perspective on life from reading it and since I’m prone to do that anyway, I’m gonna leave this one alone. I imagine it’s a life changer, the caliber of anything by OSHO, or Tolle, or Coehlo, or Miguel & Jose Luis Ruiz.

2) Sanford Meisner on Acting – This is a great book. In fact, my new writing partner is new to writing screenplays and there are only a few good books on screenwriting. It won’t take her long to get through those, the woman has a PHd for crying out loud. I didn’t think about this book. I think I should have had her read it first. It’s all about being an expression or an action and if you can access that as a writer, you have access to a screenplay the likes of As Good as it Gets and Good Will Hunting. With Meisner you can approach a scene or scenario or hell a life event ‘as if’ you were ten feet tall, or, ‘as if’ there were two doves living in your heart, such that your acting is fundamentally based on whether you can abundantly generate dynamics that move the action of the scene forward. There are great life lessons in this book.

3) The Moon and Sixpence – I’m going to to be honest, the only books I’ve read in the last year are business books and vegan cookbooks. I haven’t had any interest in even looking at what might be good to read, so, I think, based on the caliber of the rest of the books on this list, I might make this my next read. Somerset Maugham. Wow. “How Cleaassy.”

4) A History of God – This is a must read and should be mandatory adult reading for Americans, lol. The Reading Room article has such a great quote by Rob Morrow I’m just going to lift it. “… It traces the way humans have created divine narratives and how the beliefs inspired by those narratives have enabled us to survive. [This book] helped me put God into perspective and made me think about my daughter, specifically how I’m going to help this person along in her life.” I love that! Being a rather awful, yet humble Christian, I’d never surmise that I could put God into perspective, but I value all levels of greater, wider, higher, deeper levels of acknowledgment, understanding, discernment and distinction. I think ya can’t go wrong when ya go looking. You may not get it right, but you’re not gonna get it wrong. I need to read this book again. Very cool.

5) The Agony and The Ecstasy – I read this book at 25. I was much smarter, more empathic and much brighter then. It blew me away. The passion and the ’100% all in’ approach to life that Irving Stone gave his characterization of Michelangelo, breathtaking. In no way was this man’s ego at play over being an artist. He may have had ego about technique or other things, but artistry was his soul. Irving Stone built the entire book on one idea, that Michelangelo saw the statue in the stones he cut. That they were already there for him. He was just following the call. That often, all he could think about was actualizing the visions that he saw. Irving Stone writes this character as a man who WAS his purpose. He looked at other choices, but his spirit had no choice. It’s funny as I write this I hear Frank Sinatra’s I did it My Way in the back of my head. Lol. Stone’s Michelangelo didn’t have that much ego, but he did it his way anyway. The title is the book. Really being willing to live the Agony and the Ecstasy of the choices you make in life. This is such an amazing story. I don’t think there is another book like it.

Mojito’s are my favorite! Ironically since I left Los Angeles and moved to Houston, I have not had a good one. Note to Houston bar tenders. They tend to pour drinks like the still is out back… I like a good shot of moonshine from time to time, but don’t pour Hooch into my Mojito please…. Mojito’s are art, like a finely rolled cigar.

Here is My Ode to Mojitos

A classic Los Angeles Mojito – Using Rose’s Lime Juice, I think this is the trick to a great fresh Mojito. Nothing else should be added!! So your Mojito is crystal clear.

Bobby Flay knows what I mean. In his Cuban Mojo Episode he included a recipe for a simple and clean Mojito. Ah! Fresca!

Ingredients

1 teaspoon superfine sugar

2 springs fresh mint

Squeeze fresh lime juice

2 ounces light rum

Splash club soda

Ice cubes

Directions

Place sugar and mint in a tall glass and using the back of a spoon, mash the mint leaves into the sugar. Add the remaining ingredients, mix, and serve.

Here are some Recipes for messing with my Mojitos in great ways.

Tyler Florence’s (Food Network!) Blueberry Ginger Mojitos by the Pitcher

Bobby Flay’s Signature Mojito – Only three stars! See! His simple Mojito at the top of the page… 5 stars. I’m telling ya, less is more when it comes to a good Mojito!! Still, this is fun to try.

Giada’s De Laurentis’ Cherry Mojitos – I cannot get away from the Food Network! All of my favorite recipes come from here. My next favorite Recipe hunting location is Vegan Yum-Yum. I wonder if she has a Mojito recipe. These cherry Mojitos look really good. I like that in this recipe, you’ve combined the lime and the sugar into a simple syrup. Seems smart.

Ingredients

1 pound bag frozen pitted cherries

2 cups crushed ice, plus extra to serve

1/2 cup packed fresh mint leaves

I’ve given up on a business, for now, thus, I’m job hunting, broke for the most part and stuck at home. I rarely allow myself to watch TV, but today, amongst webinars, and studying, and sending out resumes, I allowed myself some Food Network TV. Wow. I picked a good day to keep the tube on. Here’s the review of what they had to offer. I need the nurturing so it all seemed so good.

You could start off a weekend with Bobby Flay’s Brunch Breakfast Grill for Dinner on a Friday, serve up Sandra Lee’s easy and elegant pork chops with cocktails for good friends on Saturday night and hang out and watch football with sandwiches and cobbler on Sunday afternoon. This is an entire weekend full of food.

Breakfast

Bobby Flay Grills Breakfast – You should see this episode. It’s so gorgeous.Everything is cooked on the Grill, even the plums.

Grilled Plums with Spiced Walnut Yogurt Sauce

Ingredients

6 plums, halved and pitted

2 teaspoons canola oil

1 tablespoon honey

Pinch ground cinnamon

Pinch finely grated orange zest

Spiced Walnut Yogurt Sauce, recipe follows

Cast Iron Home Fries - All of these ingredients are grilled before placing them in a cast iron skillet back over an open flame…

Ingredients

2 pounds new red potatoes, cooked until tender and halved

1 Spanish onion, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch thick slices

1 red bell pepper

1 yellow bell pepper

2 jalapeno chiles

Vegetable oil

Spicy Citrus Blood Mary

I’m not a big Bloody Mary fan, but I like the idea of mixing in a citrus. I might play with some of these ingredients and orange juice. I like the tang, but I do not like tomatoes and celery in my face on a Sunday morning.

This is a beautiful patio breakfast that would stun weekend guests… I love it.

Lunch

Two Options:

Tyler’s Ultimate Pulled Pork Sandwich, with homemade Chipotle Kettle Chips and Bourbon Peach Cobbler

Dinner

And a lovely lite dinner with cocktails from Sandra Lee. I think I’ll leave all of the pink stuff at her house tho!!

Start off with the Pink Elephant Cocktail! - These looked great, I don’t know why you’d wait till dinner starts to get started.

Ingredients

1 part white cranberry juice

1 part berry vodka

1/2 part raspberry liqueur (recommended: Chambord)

1/2 part Limoncello

Directions

To a shaker full of ice, add all ingredients. Shake well and pour into chilled martini glasses.

French Pork Chops

Spicy Peanut Sauce – I’ve been looking for a good peanut sauce recipe. This is not bad. I just don’t understand why she threw cashews in it. I think this sauce is for the pork chops. I’m not sure but that sounds good to me. It might make me adjust my pork chop recipe though.

Pear Salad with Gorgonzola Dressing – this is one of my favorite flavor combinations, pear, walnuts and gorgonzola…. I think she puts it over baby spinach… perfect.

And finally for dessert! Berry Compote over Lemon Tartlets – I loved this compote recipe. I’m sure the flavor is off the hook with the Dole brand fruit, but I think I’d use organic fresh strawberries and frozen organic blueberries. These are so pretty.

All of these episodes were amazing.

I grew up running wild in the suburbs of DFW. We had a lot of freedom as kids, open fields, creeks, woods and at a very young age we were out in it. At 40 I’m still not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. I still have a very difficult time sitting in a room with more than 10 people for over an hour. I start to crave trees and sunshine. So, as I volunteer more and more in disaster response, I live in Houston, TX so it goes with the territory, I’m now tuned more and more into the issues related to ‘Homeland Security”, a phrase that is clearly inappropriate. Sounds like a program for cultivating Stasi Youth.

“National Security” I have no problem with. I participate in CERT training and am Red Cross Disaster Response trained.

As I volunteer and continue to train and to develop response programs in the community, I have questions about the ethics of this program. I am a staunch constitutionalist, so personal freedoms are of primary importance to me. Also of primary importance, is, community well being. These are issues that will always bring conflict for me, how to you develop healthy communities while ensuring full access to fundamental freedoms and human rights.

Here are Janet Napolitano’s considerations at the end of September, 2009. http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/10520

I was waiting for the plumber and turned on the television. Julia Child was on PBS making omelettes. I hadn’t seen Julia Child on television for 10 years, but Amy Adams and Meryl Streep did a wonderful thing this year and resurrected her.

In this episode Julia demonstrates the ‘ins and outs’ of making a great omelette. She also makes a stacked omelette that looks fabulous. As I watched her prepare this amazing baked layered dish, I wondered to myself what would be the ultimate flavor in such a dish. In good intuitional form, up came the answer, Lobster!

I, however, try to cook vegan as much as possible, so I wondered how I could make such a perfect dish, keep the layers, maintain the inclusion of Lobster and be able to serve it as a baked dish with toppings and, maybe, some creme fraiche around the edge and a light layer of grated Italian cheese on top, all that and being animal conscientious! Good luck.

Here is Julia’s Omelette show. A link to a lobster crepe demonstration and the link to my favorite vegan blog Vegan Yum-Yum for an incredible vegan crepe recipe.

I think what I might try is a combination of crepe layers with lobster and pine nuts and an egg (omelette) layer with herbs… I haven’t decided. I do know I want to bake it for the eight to ten minutes and top it with herbs or pesto and some pecorino romano or some kind of italian cheese making it not vegan, but still conscientious in the use of animal products.

Here is a bonus, a recipe for Lobster Pie I found while looking for the the Lobster crepe recipe and the right combination of Italian cheese. I had to include it, because it sounded so good.

Finally, because I had to know what was available in Italian cheeses for this recipe, I looked up some gorgeous sites on Italian Cheeses. Wikipedia, LifeinItaly.com, iGourmet.com selling Pecorino Tuscano, 6 Most Famous Kinds of Italian Cheese, Formaggio Cheese Shop (good stuff!). MmmmmHmmmMmmm! Enjoy!
